Mike and I had a night out this week to hear the Pulitzer Prize winning author of the Maus graphic novels. It was so amazing!
This lecture series was called, "What the *&~@?!! Happened to Comics?"
Mr. Spiegelman has also illustrated covers for the New Yorker Magazine, invented and designed the "Garbage Pail Kids" bubblegum cards, publishes in several magazines, and played himself on The Simpsons.
I had the opportuntiy during the question session to ask him if he would describe the process behind his Sept. 14, 2001 cover for the New Yorker. He was 10 blocks away from Ground Zero and running to get his kids out of their nearby schools. He said that as he ran & glanced back, the towers were still there & the sky was bizarrely blue. The next glance back, one tower was down and a shadow of it seemed to linger in that space. It was a seed planted in his mind & when later that day the magazine contacted his wife (she is the cover art editor) he had already been sketching what he saw. The result is the black on black image you see here.
